A series of cultural profiles reviewing the existing professional literature and government reports on cultural groups in New York State are presented here. These profiles highlight cultural traits that need to be taken into account in order to provide meaningful mental health services that meet the needs of the concerned populations and guide service adaptations. They also provide a snapshot of the population characteristics on a national as well as state-wide level. These profiles highlight demography and immigration information, prevalence rates of mental illness, views of mental illness, cultural values that impact on mental health service use, care seeking patterns, barriers to professional services, and the impact of acculturation processes.
